Origin

The Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC) was founded in 1930 due to the need for improving business practices and relationships with architectural clients. Structural engineers had been increasingly challenged by inadequate exchange of technical information and difficulties in contractual relations.

R.C. Buell, a structural engineer with the Portland Cement Association, introduced the idea of a new organization, and SEAONC began operations with 39 charter members. SEAONC incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1949.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) Mission Statement

The Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC) embraces a diverse membership and promotes inclusion in the Association, the structural engineering workplace, and the communities we serve. The Board of Directors ensures that diversity, equity and inclusion are firmly embedded in SEAONC’s culture, initiatives, and programs.

In pursuit of these goals the Board of Directors has created the SEAONC DEI Endowment Fund. The DEI Endowment will ensure the long-range financial future of a restricted fund to support entities, programs, scholarships, and initiatives to advance DEI in the structural engineering profession. The Endowment is invested and managed separately from general SEAONC funds, including SEAONC Reserves. Gifts to the endowment are restricted to support and develop DEI activities. The Endowment is governed by the SEAONC Endowment Committee. The Committee is comprised of only SEAONC Members, with terms of three years.

Governance

SEAONC operations are performed in accordance with the Association Bylaws and Canons of Ethics. The Bylaws outline the details of membership, including descriptions of membership grades, process of admission, transfers of grade, dues, and governing structure. Amendments to the Bylaws are proposed by the Board of Directors or membership, through petition, as issues arise. Most changes require a two-thirds majority vote for adoption into the SEAONC bylaws.

The integrity of the Association is dependent on the reputation of its members and how they conduct themselves. SEAONC members, by accepting membership in the Association, agree to abide by the Canons of Ethics and codes of conduct.
