The Seismology Committee has historically engaged structural engineers in the development and application of the latest earthquake engineering codes and standards. In recent years, the committee’s mission has been expanded to include engagement of young structural engineers with the profession in a technical manner. The committee’s missions are currently accomplished through a three-pronged approach:
Collaborate with the BSSC PUC
Committee past chairs have been appointed as corresponding members; they will be updating the committee membership on the efforts within PUC. Multiple members are also involved with different ITs and FRTS teams.
Hold PUC presentations for membership to become acquainted with the different Issue Team (IT) ballots issued to the public for review and comment.
Create an ad hoc committee that will remain on call to review and deliberate on the incoming IT ballots.
University Research Program (URP)
Organize and execute another installment of URP
Establish an ad hoc URP subcommittee to support program management and potential expansion
Support current subcommittee endeavors
Subcommittees: Nonstructural, Ground Motions, Steel, Concrete, and Wood.
Reactivate steel, concrete, and wood subcommittees. Engage membership for their interest in joining these subcommittees to bring them back online.
Collaborate with ACI, AISC and AWS committees for potential projects
Explore the future direction of the Seismology committee with the SEAONC Board. Brainstorm internally and present to the Board.
Complete a Committee Membership Survey to better understand our current membership demographic, and how best to engage more active members for future endeavors/interests to improve the technical mission and goals of this committee.
